A blend of Barbera, Chatus, Bonarda, and Neretta Cuneese (or Neretto). Wines from the Pinerolese DOC are still relatively rare in the US - this one is a keeper.
The winery Le Marie, located in the ancient village of Barge, lies at the foot of Monte Viso (the highest altitude mountain belonging to the Monviso Alps range, as well as being the source of the Po River) and Mount Bracco (a popular climbing destination due to its steep grades) is the home of owner/winemaker Valerio, his wife Luigina, and their children Simona and Daniele. The family owns and works 10ha of vineyards at 400-450m asl in this historically and culturally rich alpine valley. This ancient growing area has produced wines of personality, purity, and elegance, though in quite limited quantity due to its natural boundaries, since at least the beginning of the 13th century when such cultivation was first documented. But it's likely vine-growing and wine production pre-date even that time stamp - even though the Pinerolese DOC was only created in 1997. Finding wines from this area is still relatively rare in the US, or outside its own region for that matter, so we are excited to introduce this producer and these wines to MA.
Valerio and his family employ environmentally friendly farming practices.
